How Do "christians" Handle the Truth?

"do not kill the messenger"

2 Timothy 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 4:1  I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

On September 28, 2005, a chainmail/hoax was received.  Many chainmails and hoaxes circulate the web everyday, but this one managed to elicit a reply to the recent senders.  What follows is a reproduction of what transpired.

On September 28, 2005 this email was received.

[since several of these people chose to use their "office" or "official" or their "bosses" email, I did not make the effort to mask their addresses]

Dear Friends, I thought that this was important enough to send it on to you.

Read and respond in kind.  Directions at the bottom of page.

Please, if you don't wish to participate, return this to the person who sent it to you so they can at least keep this going or forward it to someone you think will wish to participate.

Dr.  Dobson is going on CNBC to urge every Christian to get involved.  I hope you will think about signing this and forwarding to all your family and friends.  Dr.  James Dobson, with Focus on the Family, pleads for our action.  An organization has been granted a Federal Hearing on the same subject by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, DC.

Their petition, Number 2493, would ultimately pave the way to stop the reading of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, on the airwaves of America.  They got 287,000 signatures to back their stand!

If this attempt is successful, all Sunday worship services being broadcast on the radio or by television will be stopped.  This group is also campaigning to remove all Christmas programs ad Christmas carols from public schools!

You as a Christian can help!  We are praying for at least 1 million signatures.  This would defeat their effort and show that there are many Christians alive, well and concerned about our country.

As Christians, we must unite on this. Please don't take this lightly.  We ignored one lady once and lost prayer in our schools and in offices across the nation.  Please stand up for your religious freedom and let your voice be heard. Together we can make a difference in our country while creating an opportunity for the lost to know the Lord.

Please press "forward," and forward this to everyone you think should read this.

Now, please sign your name at the bottom (you can only add your name after you have pressed "Forward" or (cut and paste the text).  Don't delete any other names, just go to the next number and type your name.  Please do not sign jointly, such as Mr. & Mrs., each person should sign his/her own name. Please defeat this organization and keep the right  of our freedom of religion.

When you get to 1000 please e-mail back to: Lisa Norman at electric_yello@hotmail.com

The above list was truncated to save space, but it still shows how this particular branch of the list moved over large geographic areas.

Experience told this was a chainmail/hoax, but a quick and easy visit to, and search of, family.org revealed that Dobson disavowed any participation in the alleged petition.  No surprise there.  Moreover, O'Hare died several years ago.

Armed with this resource a short alert was sent to all available addresses in the email.  Naturally, the desire was to try and awaken some people to what they supported and maybe help stop this chainmail/hoax.  The following is the short email sent on September 28, 2005.

This email has been sent to all the available addresses on the spam email I received regarding Dobson and a dead woman name O'Hare and a petition.  These things are very easy to check before you swamp other peoples email or FAXes with junk or hoaxes.  The perpetrators of this hoax are hoping you will do exactly what happened being that you will not bother to verify the story.  I also notice that some people used their "office" or "bosses" email address to promote this scam.  I hope the boss does not mind.  If you REALLY are into doing a good deed (as sending the hoax might indicate), then maybe you will want to forward this email to alert ALL the friends to whom you sent the hoax and let them know the truth.

http://family.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/family.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=489

The actual web page was included in the email, which could save someone a bit of trouble going there themself.

A verbal update was received that a couple people who received the above alert had gotten together and at least one of them was alleging that the had received a mailing from Israels-Ekklesia and it was a virus, and they should tell everyone not to open any mail from Israels-Ekklesia.  Naturally, this is not true, and if it were credible, it would be the first.

Then on October 1, 2005, the same chainmail/hoax was received from another duped soul down the line of the very same branch of the mailing received here.

Further in the attempt to help others know the truth of the chainmail/hoax and their actions to promote a lie, a copy of the original reply was sent to the soul who sent the second mailing, with the following additional paragraph.

Here is an interesting side note.  I sent the above reply (along with the link to Dobson's website) to another list of poor fools (some I notice are on this list too - small world) who also received this  hoax and forwarded it.  I have learned that one of them went to another of them and warned the 2nd  that My email was a virus and to not open anything  from me.  Rather than admit they were duped and spread the truth, they CHOSE to attack the messenger.  Go figure.

This person replied with the following.

I LOVE all the emails I get on this stuff!  I mainly do it as an annoyance.  I get so damn many of things like this.  I'll quit wasting your time.  (You are right when you say I didn't bother to research this crap.)  I almost believe everything I see anymore - even the articles you send me!

Then on October 3, 2005, the following update was received regarding the earlier claims that emails from Israels-Ekklesia were viruses.

Did you know that your email address of ISREALS-EKKESIA crashed [some of the] governments computers, some law firm computers, moms friend anita's computer.and many others that mom has mentioned. Mom says to NOT [DON'T EVER] send her anything any more because she will be putting it under SPAM. She calls our way of life [belief] trash and other things. I dont know if it is why her computer froze up but I tried to re-assure her that it couldn't be your email address because you have had it for many years and this is the first time that this [could of possibly] of happened. SO THEY ARE ALL SAYING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IS A VIRUS AND TO NEVER SEND THEM ANYTHING. Will tell you more in person. I DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS NOR EVER WILL. .... MAYBE YASHUA IS TRYING TO TELL THEM SOMETHING AND THEY DONT SEEM TO WANT TO LISTEN TO HIM EITHER.

Then on October 5, 2005, this update is received.

Today I was trying to get some information from mom on what email supposedly crashed Anita's computer and some others from her law firm. So I tried to ask her about Dobson, she didn't seem to know what I had meant. So I then mentioned James Dobson, the guy mentioned in the hoax email she fowarded) and she still didn't get a clue until I brought up the fact that her name, my dads name and brothers name and a few other peoples names that we knew were on this petition list. Then she had gotten a clue. I wonder if she even read the email petition or just added her name like her other friends and just took it at their word. Any way she is saying the my religion/church [as she  calls it] is a occult (she probably meant cult). She said a few choice words that I find ISN'T CHRISTIAN LIKE (which she claims to be). They don't seem to want to try to check things out before adding there names to things. I feel that they could be signing there name to death warrant without any clue as to what would be the truth if they don't check things out first.

The truth sent to these people by Israels-Ekklesia was not doctrinal material, it was not a means for trying to get money, it was not asking them for anything, it was not trying to force anything on them.  It was only a link to the alledged author of the propaganda THEY willingly promoted.

As of this time, the observation is that like 2 Timothy 3:6-7 and 2 Timothy 4:2-3 mentions, the false teachers will work their ways into the homes of people (in this case, via email) and lead them astray with temptations of things those people WANT to hear.  These people want to hear fables and will turn away from the truth, even attack the truth.  BUT, they will do NOTHING on their own - except spread rumor, inuendo and lies.

Someone should tell "christians" -

"do not kill the messenger"

2 Timothy 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
