[Have you had your fill of being told what you may and may not say?  The Hansel and Gretel clip for 11/20/03 is a good example of how this alleged political correctness was a bad idea and has gone way astray.  If you are not in an industry that uses terms like "master" and "slave" (like computers & electronics), then this may not make much sense to you, but it is perfect sense to those of us who "niggardly" use these terms in our industry.  the following article mis-represents the master/slave use in computers.  They indicate that the words master and slave are used to represent the primary and secondary hard drives, which implies there are only 2 drives.  The correct application is that computers have a primary master, a primary slave, a secondary master, a secondary slave, which is a total of 4 drives.  Then we see a motive for these shenanigans.  --  Rocky]

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave" on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive.

The request -- which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components -- came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance.

In the computer industry, "master" and "slave" are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries.

"Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors.

"We would request that each manufacturer, supplier and contractor review, identify and remove/change any identification or labeling of equipment components that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature," Sandoval said in the memo, which was distributed last week and made available to Reuters.

The memo did not include any suggestions for alternative labels.

Dennis Tafoya, director of the affirmative action office, said in a separate memo that an "exhaustive search" had been undertaken to find all such labels and replace them with more "appropriate" ones. A form was sent to all departments to identify equipment carrying the labels "master" and "slave" or any other offensive terms.

Faced with an avalanche of complaints from vendors and the general public, Sandoval told Reuters in an interview that his memo was intended as "nothing more than a request" and not an ultimatum or policy change.

"I do understand that this term has been an industry standard for years and years and this is nothing more than a plea to vendors to see what they can do," he said. "It appears that some folks have taken this a little too literally."

Sandoval said that he had already rejected a suggestion that the county stop buying all equipment carrying the "master" and "slave" labels and had no intention of enforcing a ban on such terms with suppliers.

"But we are culturally sensitive and we have 90,000 employees," he said. "We have to take these things seriously."

Sandoval added that in addition to the e-mails he's received "telling me how stupid I am and how I should be fired" he has gotten a positive response from some companies willing to reexamine their labels.

In June, the Los Angeles city council unanimously passed a law requiring that any companies doing business with the city disclose profits they may have made from slavery in the 19th Century. In 2000, the council supported federal legislation seeking reparations for descendants of slaves.

To Be 6 Again

A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday.

"I'd love to be six again, " she replied.

On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, got up made her a nice big bowl of Lucky Charms and then took her off to the local theme park.

What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, everything there was.

Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. Right away, they journeyed to a McDonald's where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake.

Then it was off to a movie to see the latest blockbuster, a hot-dog, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted.

He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, "Well, Dear, what was it like being six again?"

Her eyes slowly opened and her _expression suddenly changed. "You idiot, I meant my dress size!"

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he's gonna get it wrong.

Insanity is not Being Stupid

This man was traveling down the road and one of his tires developed a leak and went flat.  He pulled to the side of the road and noticed that he was outside an insane asylum.  He also noticed a man standing nearby, and ignored the man.  The traveler proceeded to change his tire.  He had put the lug nuts in the wheel cover to keep them together during the change.  As he grabbed the wheel cover it tilted and 4 of the 5 nuts spilled and went down the nearby sewer drain.  The traveler stood there wondering what he was going to do now.

The man standing beside the road finally spoke and said “why do you not take a nut from each of the other wheels to hold the new wheel.  Then you could get down the road to a service station and get replacement nuts for all the wheels.”

The traveler responded in amazement and asked how he himself had not thought of that, yet the man on the side of the road, being a resident of the asylum, had thought of it.

The man from the asylum spoke saying “I may be crazy, but I am not stupid”.
 

IF/WHEN you mess with the private corporation which makes trillions (I don't know what the biggest $$$ word is) by unconstitutionally printing Frns, you will have dire consequences.               On June 4, 1963, a little known attempt was made to strip the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the government at interest. On that day President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order No. 11110 that returned to the U.S. government the power to issue currency, without going through the Federal Reserve. Mr. Kennedy's order gave the Treasury the power "to issue silver certificates against any silver bullion, silver, or standard silver dollars in the Treasury." This meant that for every ounce of silver in the U.S. Treasury's vault, the government could introduce new money into circulation. In all, Kennedy brought nearly $4.3 billion in U.S. notes into circulation. The ramifications of this bill are enormous.

              With the stroke of a pen, Mr. Kennedy was on his way to putting the Federal Reserve Bank of New York out of business. If enough of these silver certificats were to come into circulation they would have eliminated the demand for Federal Reserve notes. This is because the silver certificates are backed by silver and the Federal Reserve notes are not backed by anything. Executive Order 11110 could have prevented the national debt from reaching its current level, because it would have given the gevernment the ability to repay its debt without going to the Federal Reserve and being charged interest in order to create the new money. Executive Order 11110 gave the U.S. the ability to create its own money backed by silver.

              After Mr. Kennedy was assassinated just five months later, no more silver certificates were issued. The Final Call has learned that the Executive Order was never repealed by any U.S. President through an Executive Order and is still valid. Why then has no president utilized it? Virtually all of the nearly $6 trillion in debt has been created since 1963, and if a U.S. president had utilized Executive Order 11110 the debt would be nowhere near the current level. Perhaps the assassination of JFK was a warning to future presidents who would think to eliminate the U.S. debt by eliminating the Federal Reserve's control over the creation of money. Mr. Kennedy challenged the government of money by challenging the two most successful vehicles that have ever been used to drive up debt - war and the creation of money by a privately-owned central bank. His efforts to have all troops out of Vietnam by 1965 and Executive Order 11110 would have severely cut into the profits and control of the New York banking establishment. As America's debt reaches unbearable levels and a conflict emerges in Bosnia that will further increase America's debt, one is force to ask, will President Clinton have the courage to consider utilizing Executive Order 11110 and, ifso, is he willing to pay the ultimate price for doing so?               Of course, the fact that both JFK and Lincoln met the the same end is a mere coincidence.

              Abraham Lincoln's Monetary Policy, 1865 (Page 91 of Senate document 23.) Money is the creature of law and the creation of the original issue of money should be maintained as the exclusive monopoly of national Government. Money possesses no value to the State other than that given to it by circulation. Capital has its proper place and is entitled to every protection. The wages of men should be recognised in the structure of and in the social order as more important than the wages of money.

              No duty is more imperative for the Government than the duty it owes the People to furnish them with a sound and uniform currency, and of regulating the circulation of the medium of exchange so that labour will be protected from a vicious currency, and commerce will be facilitated by cheap and safe exchanges.

              The available supply of Gold and Silver being wholly inadequate to permit the issuance of coins of intrinsic value or paper currency convertible into coin in the volume required to serve the needs of the People, some other basis for the issue of currency must be developed, and some means other than that of convertibility into coin must be developed to prevent undue fluctuation in the value of paper currency or any other substitute for money of intrinsic value that may come into use.

              The monetary needs of increasing numbers of People advancing towards higher standards of living can and should be met by the Government. Such needs can be served by the issue of National Currency and Credit through the operation of a National Banking system .The circulation of a medium of exchange issued and backed by the Government can be properly regulated and redundancy of issue avoided by withdrawing from circulation such amounts as may be necessary by Taxation, Redeposit, and otherwise. Government has the power to regulate the currency and creditof the Nation.

              Government should stand behind its currency and credit and the Bank deposits of the Nation. No individual should suffer a loss of money through depreciation or inflated currency or Bank bankruptcy.

              Government possessing the power to create and issue currency and creditas money and enjoying the right to withdraw both currency and credit from circulation by Taxation and otherwise need not and should not borrow capital at interest as a means of financing Governmental work and public enterprise. The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credit needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of the consumers. The privilege of creating and issueing money is not only the supreme prerogative of Government, but it is the Governments greatest creative opportunity.

              By the adoption of these principles the long felt want for a uniform medium will be satisfied. The taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest, discounts, and exchanges. The financing of all public enterprise, the maintenance of stable Government and ordered progress, and the conduct of the Treasury will become matters of practical administration. The people can and will be furnished with a currency as safe as their own Government. Money will cease to be master and become the servant of humanity. Democracy will rise superior to the money power.

              Some information on the Federal Reserve The Federal Reserve, a Private Corporation One of the most common concerns among people who engage in any effort to reduce their taxes is, "Will keeping my money hurt the government's ability to pay it's bills?" As explained in the first article in this series, the modern withholding tax does not, and wasn't designed to, pay for government services. What it does do, is pay for the privately-owned Federal Reserve System.

              Black's Law Dictionary defines the "Federal Reserve System" as, "Network of twelve central banks to which most national banks belong and to which state chartered banks may belong. Membership rules require investment of stock and minimum reserves."

              Privately-owned banks own the stock of the Fed. This was explained in more detail in the case of Lewis v. United States, Federal Reporter, 2nd Series, Vol. 680, Pages 1239, 1241 (1982), where the court said:

              Each Federal Reserve Bank is a separate corporation owned by commercial banks in its region. The stock-holding commercial banks elect two thirds of each Bank's nine member board of directors.

              Similarly, the Federal Reserve Banks, though heavily regulated, are locally controlled by their member banks. Taking another look at Black's Law Dictionary, we find that these privately owned banks actually issue money: Federal Reserve Act. Law which created Federal Reserve banks which act as agents in maintaining money reserves, issuing money in the form of bank notes, lending money to banks, and supervising banks. Administered by Federal Reserve Board (q.v.).

              The FED banks, which are privately owned, actually issue, that is, create, the money we use. In 1964 the House Committee on Banking and Currency, Subcommittee on Domestic Finance, at the second session of the 88th Congress, put out a study entitled Money Facts which contains a good description of what the FED is:

              The Federal Reserve is a total money-making machine.It can issue money or checks. And it never has a problem of making its checks good because it can obtain the $5 and $10 bills necessary to cover its check simply by asking the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving to print them.

              As we all know, anyone who has a lot of money has a lot of power. Now imagine a group of people who have the power to create money. Imagine the power these people would have. This is what the Fed is.

              No man did more to expose the power of the Fed than Louis T. McFadden, who was the Chairman of the House Banking Committee back in the 1930s. Constantly pointing out that monetary issues shouldn't be partisan, he criticized both the Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt administrations. In describing the Fed, he remarked in the Congressional Record, House pages 1295 and 1296 on June 10, 1932, that:

              Mr. Chairman,we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks. The Federal Reserve Board, a Government Board, has cheated the Government of the United States and he people of the United States out of enoughmoney to pay the national debt. The depredations and the iniquities of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks acting together have cost this country enough money to pay the national debt several times over. This evil institution has impoverished and ruined the people of the UnitedStates; has bankrupted itself, and has practically bankrupted our Government. It has done this through the maladministration of that law by which the Federal Reserve Board, and through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures who control it.

              Some people think the Federal reserve banks are United States Government institutions. They are not Government institutions. They are private credit monopolies which prey upon the people of the United States for the benefit of themselves and their foreign customers; foreign and domestic speculators and swindlers; and rich and predatory money lenders. In that dark crew of financial pirates there are those who would cut a man's throat to get a dollar out of his pocket; there are those who send money into States to buy votes to control our legislation; and there are those who maintain an international propaganda for the purpose of deceiving us and of wheedling us into the granting of new concessions which will permit them to cover up their past misdeeds and set again in motion their gigantic train of crime. Those 12 private credit monopolies were deceitfully and disloyally foisted upon this country by bankers who camehere from Europe and who repaid us for our hospitality by undermining our American institutions.

              The Fed basically works like this: The government granted its power to create money to the Fed banks. They create money, then loan it back to the government charging interest. The government levies income taxes to pay the interest on the debt. On this point, it's interesting to note that the Federal Reserve act and the sixteenth amendment, which gave congress the power to collect income taxes, were both passed in 1913. The incredible power of the Fed over the economy is universally admitted. Some people, especially in the banking and academic communities, even support it. On the other hand, there are those, both in the past and in the present, that speak out against it. One of these men was President John F. Kennedy. His efforts were detailed in Jim Marrs' 1990 book, Crossfire:

              Another overlooked aspect of Kennedy's attempt to reform American society involves money. Kennedy apparently reasoned that by returning to the constitution, which states that only Congress shall coin and regulate money, the soaring national debt could be reduced by not paying interest to the bankers of the Federal Reserve System, who print paper money then loan it to the government at interest. He moved in this area on June 4, 1963, by signing Executive Order 11,110 which called for the issuance of $4,292,893,815 in United States Notes through the U.S. Treasury rather than the traditional Federal Reserve System. That same day, Kennedy signed a bill changing the backing of one and two dollar bills from silver to gold, adding strength to the weakened U.S. currency.

              Kennedy's comptroller of the currency, James J. Saxon, had been at odds with the powerful Federal Reserve Board for some time, encouraging broader investment and lending powers for banks that were not part of the Federal Reserve system. Saxon also had decided that non-Reserve banks could underwrite state and local general obligation bonds, again weakening the dominant Federal Reserve banks.

              A number of "Kennedy bills" were indeed issued - the author has a five dollar bill in his possession with the heading "United States Note" - but were quickly withdrawn after Kennedy's death. According to information from the Library of the Comptroller of the Currency, Executive Order 11,110 remains in effect today, although successive administrations beginning with that of President Lyndon Johnson apparently have simply ignored it and instead returned to the practice of paying interest on Federal Reserve notes. Today we continue to use Federal Reserve Notes, and the deficit is at an all-time high. The point being made is that the IRS taxes you pay aren't used for government services. It won't hurt you, or the nation, to legally reduce or eliminate your tax liability.

Hansel and Gretel were lost in the woods when they came upon a house made of candy and cake. An old witch invited them in and then captured both of them intending to eat them. Gretel had a chance to save both of them by pushing the old woman in an oven but she decided that it would be wrong not to respect the witch's cultural traditions. Norman and his wife live in Fargo. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through."

 Norman's wife goes out and moves her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through."

Norman's wife goes out and moves her car again. The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park..........." then the electric power goes out.

Norman's wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do." Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplow can get through?

With the love and understanding in his voice like all of us men, who are married, exhibit, Norman says, "Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will see a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell differently...because it has no nutritional value, nothing will  grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to  grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic.

Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

While former Alabama Justice Roy Moore has been removed from office due to controversy surrounding a religious display in a public building, the New York City Police Department is displaying a copy of the Muslim Quran in the lobby of its headquarters.

According to Newsday, the holy book was placed in a glass cube atop a brass pedestal at the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadan, which began Oct. 27. The display is featured near the Hall of Heroes and is placed in front of the official police seal.

Donna Lieberman, the New York Civil Liberties Union executive director, warned against government promotion of religion, saying the Quran display likely violates the Constitution.

"I think that the government, including the Police Department, cannot engage in religious promotion," she told the paper. "There's a vast difference between promoting religion and in educating police officers about religions so that they understand and are sensitive to various values and beliefs."

Continued Lieberman: "It is not always clear where the line is drawn. But when the government engages in promoting religion, that crosses the line."

According to the report, the NYPD has eight chaplains of various faiths.

One of those chaplains, Imam Izak-El Mu'eed Pasha, spearheaded installation of the Quran display. He told Newsday police work makes religion a central part of police life.

"By the nature of the job, they have to have some faith," he told the paper. "There's no way to do it without having faith."

Pasha said it would be "wrong" for the department to prohibit such a display based on church-state separation concerns.

"Without them having faith I think you would have a different police department that probably would not be able to serve all its people in the best way," he is quoted as saying.

Dirt:          Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun:  Call it an SPF factor of 15 and leave it alone.

Cobwebs:          Cobwebs artfully draped over lampshades reduce the glare from the bulb, thereby creating a romantic atmosphere. If your husband points out that the light fixtures need dusting, simply look confused and exclaim, "What? And spoil the mood?" (I just throw glitter on them & call them holiday decorations).

Pet Hair:          Explain the mound of pet hair brushed up against the doorways by claiming you are collecting it there to use for stuffing hand-sewn play animals for underprivileged children. (Also keeps out cold drafts in winter).

Guests:          If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl, and say, "I'd love you to see our den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed, and the shots are SO expensive."

Painting:          Don't bother repainting. Simply scribble lightly over a dirty wall with an assortment of crayons, and try to muster a glint of tears as you say, "Junior did this the week before that unspeakable accident, and I haven't had the heart to clean it."

General Cleaning:          Mix one-quarter cup pine-scented household cleaner with four cups of water in a spray bottle. Mist the air lightly. Leave dampened rags in conspicuous locations. Develop an exhausted look, throw yourself on the couch, and sigh, "I clean and I clean, and I still don't get anywhere."

As a last resort:          Light the oven, throw a teaspoon of cinnamon in a pie pan, turn off the oven, and explain that you have been baking cookies for a bake sale for a favorite charity and haven't had time to clean...Works every time!

I just had the most interesting experience of my life. While shopping at Goody’s in Fayetteville on Friday, I was asked if I wanted to get 10% off my purchases. I said that would be GREAT. The clerk told me all I had to do was sign up for a Goody’s credit card TODAY with a picture I.D. and another major credit card and I could get my 10% off on my purchase.

I showed her my Arkansas driver’s license and another major credit card, then she asked for my SSN. I told her I didn’t use it because it was only for Social Security Insurance purposes. She then called her supervisor up, a young man of about 22, and he said, “May we have your SSN?”  I said, “No, it is illegal for you to even ask me for it and it is also against the law for you to deny me services for not producing it.”  He said, “NO, we can ask you for it for checking your credit.”

Then, I took a copy of these laws out of my billfold and gave it to him. He stood there reading it with his eyeballs popping out. He then told the clerk to call someone (I would assume a bank credit card processing service) and ask if there was some other way to do this. She did. The woman on the other end of the line told her if I WAS A ILLEGAL ALIEN or if I WAS A NON-RESIDENT ALIEN, or if I DID NOT HAVE A SSN, that they could GIVE me a CREDIT CARD and I could GET THE 10% DISCOUNT. I asked to speak to her myself. I proceeded to quote, word for word, Title 5, USC 522 (a) (1) and Title 42 USC, Sec. 408 to her, both of which state that SHE nor anyone else could refuse or deny me services because I would not produce my SSN, and that Title 42 USC, Sec. 408 even states:  “Whomever discloses, uses or compels the disclosure of the Social Security Number of any person in violation of the laws of the United States shall be guilty of a felony upon conviction thereof, shall be fined under Title 18, USC (Crimes and Criminal procedure) or imprisoned for five years or both.”

The Social Security Administration provides for VOLUNTARY application to a social pension program and does not require mandatory application in the Social Security Act as such requirement would be unconstitutional. Any reference to MANDATORY USE of the Social Security Number by an employer or financial institution is UNLAWFUL and constitutes a breach of trust and FELONY DEPRIVATION of constitutional rights of a citizen under Title 18 USC 241.

Now, here’s the REST OF THE STORY….She then proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms that the NEW PATRIOT ACT now overrides ALL other laws on the books and that IF she did not get my SSN from me, that their financial institution could be fined thousands, if not millions of dollars. It was for MY protection and I should just give it to her so she could process my credit card application for my 10% discount.

BOY, DO I FEEL100% SAFE NOW!  Those who are ILLEGALS can get FREE CREDIT CARDS, CAN WORK here, CAN get 10% DISCOUNTS at major stores, and NO ONE, including BIG BROTHER TRACKING SYSTEM needs to know who they are, what they are doing, what they are buying, where they are going, etc.

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF THE FREE. As long as YOU do what WE SAY, as long as WE know your every move, as long as WE know what you believe, as long as WE know where you are spending your money, you are FREE. Monetary Realists, knowing not so much what they've been taught, but what they've learned with their eyes open and ears tuned, see things clearly, without peering through a haze of misinformation masquerading as knowledge. Like the boy in The Emperor's New Clothes, they make observations which seem to cause frustration and annoyance to those public figures to which they are directed. A case in point is the word "dollar," the definition of which has been sought by Monetary Realists for decades.

Some years ago Paul Volcker, of the Federal Reserve, was lecturing in St. Louis. A Monetary Realist ( not your author ) was in attendance. At the conclusion of Mr. Volcker's remarks, questions were invited, and the Monetary Realist asked, "Mr. Volcker, in your remarks you used the word "dollar" twenty-six ( or whatever ) times. Can you tell me what a dollar is?" There was a remarkable silence. Volcker said nothing. The silence grew protracted; it was embarrassing. "Well, sir, can you tell me what the yen is, or the mark? You mentioned them as well." The silence continued. Eventually, the host made some excuse and hustled Mr. Volcker from the stage.

Over twenty years ago I wrote a letter to the head of the St. Louis Federal Reserve and asked another simple question: is our money tangible? If so, I asked, what are its physical characteristics? If not, how can you tell if you've got it? A brief note was received in reply, stating, in effect, that due to the "technical nature" of my question, the president ( of the bank ) was unable to answer at this time. He hasn't answered since.

On discovering the ease with which federal officials can be reached via the internet, I recently decided to try again, and on September 6, 1998, sent this message to the Treasury Department: "How is the word "dollar" defined in U.S. Law? Can you give me the citation? Thanks." The answer received was from "Customer Assistance," and read, "Thank you for your recent inquiry. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency ( OCC ) examines national banks to assure their safe and sound financial condition and to ensure their compliance with federal banking laws, rules, and regulations. The dollar is defined as a currency bill and monetary unit of the United States, equal to 100 cents. This Office does not have information on the specific cite in the federal regulations. You may try contacting the Federal Reserve Bank at 202-874-4700. We trust this is responsive to your inquiry."

Well, not quite. I replied, on September 14: "Dear Customer Assistance: Thank you for your letter. You write that the dollar is a currency bill. Does that mean it is an IOU? An IOU for what? You also say it is a monetary unit. A unit is a standardized amount used in measuring. What does the dollar measure? Of what is it a unit? Thank you." This time I received a response from an actual person with a name, Angela Willis, a Customer Assistance Specialist. ( Customer Assistance@CAG@COC ) "Thank you for your recent inquiry. Please contact the Federal Reserve Bank for any other questions you may have. Thank you."

I responded: "I would like an answer from the government. Isn't the Federal reserve a private bank?" Ms. Willis replied: "Thank you for your recent inquiry. The Federal Reserve Bank is the central bank of the United States Government. It was founded by Congress in 1913 to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system. We trust this is responsive to your inquiry."

Wow! Talk about pulling teeth. I tried again: "I'm sorry, but your answer is NOT responsive. The question was, and is, "what is a dollar?" Don't refer me to a private banking cartel for the answer to what surely must be defined in U.S. Law. After all, if there is no definition of the dollar, how can a person measure his income in dollars and swear to the government that the answer is "true, correct, and complete?" Congress is given authority to regulate the value of the dollar. What is its value? Don't tell me it's 100 cents, and then define the cent as 1/100th of a dollar. Please try again. It's a simple question, isn't it? Thanks."

Ms. Willis, was, I fear, losing patience with me. "Thank you for your recent inquiry. We have tried to direct you to the agency that could be most responsive to your inquiry. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency regulates national banks. This agency does not have regulatory authority over actual currency, although our name may make you think otherwise. If you have issues dealing with the national banking system, please feel free to request our assistance. We will not respond to any other inquiries regarding the definition of a dollar."

In other words, the U.S. Treasury either doesn't know, or won't tell, what a "dollar" is. Moreover, in taking this evasive stand, it tries to distract the questioner with irrelevant references to the Comptroller of the Currency, and a disingenuous disclaimer that it ( the Treasury ) has no "regulatory authority over actual currency."

Back in 70s I asked the dollar question to the Internal Revenue Service. After all, you must swear to the value of your income in "dollars," testifying that your evaluation is "true, correct, and complete," under penalty of perjury, although, having taken no oath, you couldn't have committed that crime. Surely, therefore, the IRS would know what a dollar is. How else could it determine the accuracy of the return? The reply from the IRS was remarkably straightforward: "The term "dollar" is not defined in the Internal Revenue Code." I wrote back, requesting a definition from any portion of the United States Code, and am still awaiting the reply.

About the same time I wrote a letter to the president of my bank, and asked him what a dollar was. He sent me a very nice, rather rambling letter, in which he concluded that he really couldn't tell me, but if I found out what it was, would I let him know?
 

It is experiences such as these which give Monetary Realists, and others, I am sure, grounds for the gravest cynicism about economic matters. The silly platitudes mouthed by President Clinton about the Russian economy, for example, deserve nothing but contempt. When a people work for "money" which is so ephemeral as to defy description, measured out in units which cannot be defined by the country's monetary authorities, the problem transcends political parties or economic policies. The rot is in the roots, not the branches.

In the days of tangible money, or sound money, or even just plain money, as opposed to "credit," the dollar was easy to define: 412.5 grains of standard ( 90% pure ) silver in coin form. The 412.5 grain figure was an average; the coin weighed 416 when minted. When, through wear and tear, its weight fell below 409 grains, it was no longer a dollar, but could be used in trade for a value in proportion to its weight. In general, banks culled out the worn coins and returned them to the mint to be recast. What a simple system! A bank official, asked to define "dollar," could do so in a sentence, without reference to the Comptroller of the Currency, or bank regulations, or "authority over actual ( sic! ) currency." Moreover, he could do so without making a fool of himself by attempts to mislead, confuse, or deceive. He wouldn't even have to piously reiterate "Thank you for your inquiry" every time he gave a long-winded response that had nothing to do with the inquiry.

Money is one of the basics of society. Is it extreme to suggest that without sound money there cannot be a sound society? And if the money is inherently dishonest, what does that say of the people who issue it, or even of the people who accept it?

JERUSALEM - Russian oil will begin flowing through an Israeli pipeline in late November, the pipeline's director said Wednesday, signaling a new chapter in rapidly improving relations with Moscow.

The announcement came on the same day Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) returned from a three day visit to Moscow, where he discussed political and trade ties, and the Middle East peace process with President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites).

The Russian oil will move through the Eilat-Ashkelon Oil Pipeline Co., according to its director, Emmanuel Sakal. He said the oil was earmarked for markets in the Far East, a major focus of Russia's developing export strategy.

Sakal would not say how large the shipments would be, which companies were providing them, or give a dollar value on the deal.

Oil analyst Valery Nesterov of Troika Dialog in Moscow said Lukoil and Rosneft, which have production facilities in southern Russia, would be the likeliest candidates to exploit the facility.

About 80 percent of Russia's 126 million gallons per day of oil exports go to Europe, with about half of the rest heading for the Far East.

However, Nesterov said, Russia is keen to increase its Asian oil sales.

"Russian oil companies are eying the Far East because the European markets are congested," he said.

The 158-mile Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline was built in the late 1960s by Israel and Iran to move Iranian oil to markets in Europe and the United States. It provided a convenient link between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, instead of the costlier route around South Africa's Cape of Good Hope.

Since the Iranian revolution in 1979 ended Iranian-Israeli diplomatic and trade relations, the pipeline has been limited to moving relatively small amounts of Egyptian oil from fields in the Sinai Peninsula to northern Israel for refining. The pipeline can move about 46.2 million gallons of oil per day.

In the past two years, Sakal said, the company has completed a project to reverse the direction of the line from north to south. This would allow for shipments of Russian oil to reach the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon, be sent to Eilat and over the Red Sea toward the Far East, where demand is growing fastest.

Russia is considering a number of pipeline projects between yet- untapped oil reserves in eastern Siberia and markets in South Korea (news - web sites), China and Japan, but those plans are still many years off.

Large portions of Russian oil exports to the Far East currently move by rail through Siberia.

A spokesman for Sharon said Israel and Russia have a common interest in exploiting the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline.

"We want to make money from this (through transit fees) and the Russians want to send oil through it," said the spokesman, Raanan Gissin.

Russia's relations with Israel have improved dramatically since the Soviet collapse in 1991, and Moscow has played a role in peace efforts as part of the international quartet that includes the United States, the United Nations (news - web sites) and the European Union (news - web sites).

The presence of 1 million Russian-speaking immigrants, one-sixth of Israel's population and a powerful political force, has become an important factor in bilateral relations.

Drain Cleaner and Quicklime Poisons Approved for Food Supplements as Safe Vitamins are Banned

Three substances approved for use in food supplements by the European Commission and the Food Standards Agency are exposed
today as fatal to humans.

Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide and Calcium Oxide - also known as Caustic Soda, Caustic Potash and Quicklime - are all
contained in a list of "safe" substances for supplementation in the EU's Food Supplements Directive, supposedly devised to protect
consumers.

Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide are widely used as constituents of drain and oven cleaners, while Calcium Oxide is
commonly used to destroy carcasses of humans and animals.

Thus, the Directive licenses three potentially fatal chemicals, while seeking to ban hundreds of vitamins and minerals in
beneficial doses, at levels recognised by UK and international scientists as perfectly safe.

The revelation, say campaigners, should force a full review of the Directive by the UK and the EU. More than 1,000,000 consumers
signed a petition handed to Government last week, urging politicians to resist the draconian restrictions, which will force many people to
resort to pharmaceutical drugs.

Highlighting the "ludicrously flawed" legislation, Consumers for Health Choice said the Directive will actually allow the inclusion of
poisons, while banning hundreds of safe, proven, vitamin and mineral products, that have been on the UK market for decades.

It was CHC who commissioned the report into the list of so-called "approved substances" from Phylax Ltd., consultants in toxicology.

The independent report says: "The list contains three substances that if included in food supplements could prove fatal if ingested.
These substances.…as their names imply….are caustic substances with well-established toxic effects when administered orally or
by skin exposure or in aerosol form".

"All the three caustic substances have been used in the past as constituents of pastes used to destroy skin growths such as warts
but are rarely or ever used today."

"Due to the caustic nature of these substances, humane practice precludes modern, conventional animal toxicity testing….
References to the damaging effects of these substances are listed in standard texts dealing with the hazards of industrial
chemicals."

Sue Croft, Consumers for Health Choice, said: "In the past Calcium Oxide has been combined with sodium hydroxide as a constituent of
London Paste, used to destroy skin tissue

"This report just illustrates the superficial and farcical nature of the way Government and the EU has approached the whole subject.
If they want to regain consumer confidence, it's not enough to say 'we'll drop these three, then' - they must go back to the drawing
board, and simply start again."

The Food Supplements Directive, due to become law in the UK next year, contains a list of nutrients and nutrient sources for use in
dietary supplements. At present over 300 safe and popular nutrients and nutrient sources, which have been on the UK market for
decades, are not on the permitted list and unless comprehensive safety dossiers are submitted and approved for each, they will be
banned.

Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda, NaOH)
This substance is widely used in industry as a constituent of powerful cleaning agents such as lye and domestically as a constituent of
drain and oven cleaners. Its use in these latter applications has declined due to its obvious dangers and it has been replaced largely by
less corrosive agents.

Animal Studies

Acute Toxicity

Other Studies
Oral intubation of a 4% solution in rabbits caused mucosal and sub-mucosal necrosis within 10 seconds, a 12% solution eroded into the
muscle, and a 28% solution caused perforation. Similar results are seen in cats. A 5% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide applied to
the skin of rabbits for 4 hr produced severe necrosis; however, a 1% solution (pH 13.4) failed to cause gastric, oesophageal, or other

Human exposure by ingestion leads to symptoms and outcomes similar to that for Potassium Hydroxide (q.v)

Potassium Hydroxide (Caustic Potash, KOH)
This chemical possesses similar caustic properties to sodium hydroxide and is used for similar purposes.

Human Toxicity Excerpts:

Acute poisoning: Ingestion of potassium hydroxide is followed by severe pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, & collapse. The vomitus contains
blood and desquamated mucosal lining. If death does not occur in the first 24 hours, the patient may improve for 2-4 days and then have
a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain, board-like abdominal rigidity, and rapid fall of blood pressure indicating delayed gastric or
oesophageal perforation. Oesophageal stricture can occur weeks, months, or even years later to make swallowing difficult. Carcinoma is
a risk in later life. (5)

Calcium Oxide
This is a constituent of lye, a powerful chemical disinfectant used to destroy carcases of humans and animals that may pose a risk to
health. It has been used in the past combined with sodium hydroxide as a constituent of London Paste, used to destroy skin.

Human Toxicity Excerpts:

Ingestion of calcium oxide causes swallowing to become painful and difficult almost immediately burning pain extends down the
oesophagus to stomach. Contaminated areas of lips, chin, tongue and the pharynx become oedematous and covered with exudate.
There is profuse salivation and because of pharyngeal and oesophageal oedema, it may become impossible after a few hours to swallow
even saliva. Mucous membranes are at first white but later brown, oedematous, gelatinous, and necrotic. Vomitus is thick and slimy due
to mucus; later it may contain blood and shreds of mucous membrane. Death may ensue if not treated (6)
