Drive letter assignments

Make a 2nd hard drive NOT take the "D" drive position
This is for Windows systems

Many of us have experienced the problem of setting up a computer and then adding a 2nd hard drive, only to discover the drive letters have been re-assigned.  Now ALL your shortcuts do not work, because the drive to which they went is now a different drive letter.

Sometimes the solution was to take a lot of aspirin or put in a dummy drive to hold the "D" slot and write all the shortcuts to drives "E" and after, ignoring "D".

But, now a solution is discovered.

FDISK holds the key

When you FDISK a drive you have the choice of making a

1  PRIMARY DOS drive or partition and
2  EXTENDED DOS partitions (the remaining drive space not taken by the PRIMARY DOS partition),
3  then within the EXTENDED DOS partition you can make LOGICAL DOS partitions.

The secret is DO NOT make the drive a PRIMARY DOS drive, or if partitioning, DO NOT make a PRIMARY DOS partition.

Instead, start by making an EXTENDED DOS drive or partition.  If making partitions then make the LOGICAL DOS partitions within there.

Evidently, windows sees a PRIMARY drive or partition and wants to give it HIGH status, thereby putting it right next to "C" drive/partition.
